6 Awesome Must See Sites in The Hometown of Superman

Looking for a small town with lots of fun things to do? Metropolis, Illinois is the perfect day trip, road trip stop, or a couple day excursion that is fun for the whole family. We recently visited Metropolis. We're nerdy fans, so the home of Superman has so many fun museums and statues to check out, as well as delicious food, cute stores, and interesting artifacts.
Here’s what we did during our trip to Metropolis, Illinois.
Why you should visit Metropolis, Illinois (overview)
- The home of Superman has really cool themed museums, street names, and statues.
- Very walkable small town: easy to get around to explore.
- Close to nature. The Ohio River is right by downtown.
- Historical fort and park to learn history.
- Get off the beaten path. Metropolis isn’t a big tourist destination, but it should be.

SuperMuseum
You can’t go to Metropolis without checking out the Super Museum. The brightly colored blue, yellow, and red outside makes way for over 70,000 Superman artifacts from an avid collector. Check out the 75+ years of different Superman toys, props from the movies, and the George Reeves Superman costume. SuperMuseum has won numerous awards, including being named "#1 Small Town Attraction In America."

Superman Statues
Don’t forget to snap some photos outside the iconic 15-foot Superman statue. Then check out the Lois Lane statue as well.
The Ohio River & Hope Lighthouse
If you’re looking for a break from Superman, Metropolis is located on the Ohio River. Check out the blue and white lighthouse on the shore, built and dedicated to the fight against cancer. The 30-foot-tall lighthouse stands at the west entrance to the city-owned Dorothy Miller Park in Metropolis.

Fort Massac
You’ll find Illinois’ first state park near Metropolis. The 1500 acres are the perfect place to get out and explore nature or play an 18-hole round of disc golf. Want to learn more about Metropolis and Illinois’ history? Visit the historical fort to learn more about the early history. Be sure to see if they have any historical reenactments or events going on during your visit. You won’t want to miss it!
Cordavinos

We finished our day at Metropolis checking out Cordavinos. Rumored to be the best restaurant in town, we were not disappointed. The Italian food choices were just up our alley, with tasty pizza, pasta, and salad options at an affordable price point.
Casino
The Casino is a great place to play, eat, or sleep in Metropolis. You can see the Casino from the main street making it easy to get back after a long day of exploring. The rooms are spacious and bright, and you can get River-view rooms, to watch the barges sail down the Ohio River.
